Cigars & Leisure editors, Brian and Alex, had the privilege of staying at the incomparably beautiful Casa de Campo Resort & Villas in La Romana while attending the Procigar Festival in the Dominican Republic. This resort is so gigantic that it feels like its own city, and each guest even gets a golf cart to drive around the sprawling 7,000-acre property.
One of Casa de Campo’s claims to fame is its three championship golf courses, including Teeth of the Dog, the No. 1 ranked course in the Caribbean. We, unfortunately, didn’t get a chance to try it, as the waitlist had long been full by the time we thought about doing it, so make sure you book your tee time early.
Among the resort’s many amenities are a beautiful and secluded beach, marina, spa, fitness center, equestrian center, tennis courts, polo facilities, boutique shopping area made to look like a 16th-century Mediterranean village, pools with a swim-up bar, and even a skeet shooting range.
The restaurants we tried were practically perfect, the service impeccable, and the meals delicious to a fault, as we ended up eating our weight in food. The Minitas Beach Club & Restaurant is picturesque, like something off a postcard. You must pinch yourself every once and a while to remind yourself that it’s real. The Lago Restaurant serves up a buffet-style breakfast that we enjoyed every morning, and the La Caña Bar & Lounge served poolside lunch.
The rooms are spacious, and we especially enjoyed the large private terrace. A nice touch was returning to our room in the evenings and finding our beds turned down and slippers at the ready. We loved those slippers. And if you really want to splurge and live large, there are villas that include your own private pool.
We can’t recommend this resort enough. It is without a doubt one of the most beautiful resorts in the Dominican Republic, if not the entire Caribbean. Check out its site for more pictures and details, and start planning your trip now.
