A cigar smoker recently posed the question, “What is sun grown tobacco? Isn’t all tobacco grown in the sun?” The answer to that question is both yes, all tobacco is grown in the sun; but the answer to that question is also a bit more complex than that.
Sun grown tobacco is tobacco that’s grown in direct sunlight. This typically leads to thicker leaves and veins and when used as a wrapper, sun grown tobacco makes for fuller flavored cigars and darker leaves. Sun grown tobacco also has more sweetness, a byproduct of the photosynthesis process. Sun grown tobacco shouldn’t be confused with shade grown tobacco, which is typically a lighter shade, the veins are much finer, and it doesn’t have the same level of sweetness as sun grown tobacco. Shade grown tobacco is grown in the sun but the growers go through extra measures, such as installing a cheesecloth over the crop, to prevent the tobacco from receiving full-on sun.
