Texas has become known as one of the centers of the contemporary art world. And Austin, the fourth-largest city in the state, is no exception. The city is not just flourishing economically but is also home to a thriving visual arts community.
Dotted with many well-regarded galleries and home to esteemed museums like The Contemporary Austin, the city draws collectors and observers of contemporary art into its many public sites. This winter, you can enjoy gallery-hopping throughout the city, the perfect daytime activity for an Austin explorer.
The Contemporary Austin houses its contemporary exhibits, commissions, and permanent collection in its downtown location, The Jones Center, as well as Laguna Gloria, a 14-acre property on Lake Austin that houses multiple venues. Visit the Jones Center Tuesday through Sunday in the heart of downtown Austin for over 5,000 square feet of installations from contemporary artists around the country and the world. Or visit the grounds of Laguna Gloria to see the Betty and Edward Marcus Sculpture Park, gardens, and the Driscoll Villa.
The grayDUCK Gallery, which opened in South Austin in 2010 and relocated to art-centric East Austin in 2014, is a welcoming converted warehouse space where both local and national artists can showcase their work in monthly exhibits. The gallery is open Wednesday through Sunday and is also a venue for other visual and performing arts, like poetry readings and film screenings.
ART on 5th, located in South Austin, is 7,000 square feet of gallery space for the changing works of over 40 local, national, and international contemporary artists. The gallery also houses a permanent collection of The Secret Art of Dr. Seuss. The minimalist space is the perfect venue to wander through during your trip to Austin. It’s open Monday through Saturday.
